PCI DSS compliance requires any organisation that transmits, processes, or stores data that contains payment card information to protect the privacy and confidentiality of that data. In addition to retailers, the PCI DSS standards affect financial institutions, healthcare providers, transportation service providers, the food and hospitality industry, and payment service providers, among many others.

The 12 broad requirements can be grouped into six key areas: building and maintaining a secure network; protecting cardholder data; maintaining a vulnerability management program; implementing strong access control measures; regularly monitor and testing networks; and maintaining an information security policy.
